Huixtán is a Tsotsil municipality located between San Cristóbal de Las Casas and
Oxchuc. Traditionally, the huipiles of the region were woven on backstrap looms
with vertical stripes and subtle brocades.

Today, many garments are made through floral embroidery on industrial fabrics,
reflecting changes in materials and production times.

Large, embroidered flowers have become one of the most visible features of the area's contemporary dress.

Curiosity:

Despite changes in technique, embroidery continues to be an important activity within the family economy.

  • Fill embroidery

The thread completely covers a delimited surface, creating solid figures with great visual volume. It is worked with dense stitches that "fill" the silhouettes.

  • Chain embroidery

A series of loops linked together forming a continuous chain. It produces thick, curved, and expressive lines.

  • Cross-stitch embroidery:

Stitches that cross in an X shape over the fabric, allowing geometric patterns and figures to be created with great precision.
